Maha Shivaratri (Mahāśivarātri) is a Hindu Festival celebrated annually in honour of the god Shiva Or Mahadev. The name also refers to the night when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance called Tandav.

Devotees should get up early in the morning, take a bath and then they must visit the Shivalaya, the Shiva temple and perform rites such as simple Rudrabhisheka (watering the Shiva Lingam) with auspicious ingredients, including various kinds of fruits and especially with bel leaves

Traditional way of observing Maha Shivratri

In Hindu cosmology, a day is divided into eight segments known as prahars, of three hours each. Thus, there are four units/segments of the day and four of the night. Mahashivratri is celebrated in the four units of the night. Shiva is worshipped in different forms in different prahars, so that’s four styles of worship all through the night, with the help of simple Rudrabhisheka and prayers.

In every month of the luni-solar Hindu Calender, there is a Shivaratri – "night of Shiva" – on the day before new moon. But once a year, in late winter and before the arrival of Summer (February/March), this night is called "Maha Shivaratri" – "the Great Night of Shiva". This day falls in the month of Phalguna as per the North Indian Hindu calendar and in MAGHA as per the South Indian Hindu calendar. People chant the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” as much as possible the whole day and night, or at least 108 times. There are many others who chant sacred hymns of Lord Shiva,

MAHIMA OF MAHA SHIVRATRI

Whatever might have happened in the history behind the celebration of this day and stories may differ, but the procedure of celebration is almost the same everywhere. Everyone observes the fast, worship and chant the sacred hymns and mantras of Lord Shiva on this day. The Shiv Linga is worshipped by pouring water over it and people fast — sometimes without even consuming water — for the whole night.

It is a major festival in Hinduism and this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Lord Shiva and chanting prayers, Fasting and meditating on ethics and virtues such as honesty, non-injury to others, charity, forgiveness, and the discovery of Lord Shiva. Ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirling. The festival originated in circa the 5th Century CE According to the calender followed in south india. Maha Shivaratri is observed on Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksh in the month of Magha, and in other parts of India, on 13/14 night of Krishna Paksha in Phalguna Hindu Calender the Gregorian date however remaining the same. This Year Maha Shiratri is on 1st march, 2022 day-Tuesday

In Kashmir Shaivism, the festival is called Har-ratri or phonetically simpler Haerath or Herath by Shiva devotees of the Kashmir region.
